FOOD AND NUTRITION UNIT

OBJECTIVES
1)  Students will understand what nutrients are in a variety of foods.
2)  Students will identify how your body digests and uses these nutrients.
3)  Students will read food labels and analyze them for nutritional content and make informed choices about the foods they eat.
4)  Students will plan healthy meals and exercise regiments.

ACTIVITIES
o  Students will read “Food and Nutrition” in class and take notes using the Nutritional Guidelines handout.
o  Students will conduct the “Fat Lab” and identify a variety of foods both high and low in fat.
o  Students will conduct the “Sugar Lab” and identify which cereals are high in sugar.
o  Students will analyze nutritional labels from a variety of foods, analyze them for nutritional content, and create a menu for a healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Each meal will include nutritional information.
o  Student teams will create a fitness workout that include aerobic, strengthening, and flexibility exercises.
o  Students will write a letter to a restaurant of their choice stating their opinions about the food based on nutrition.
o  Students will complete the human body packet.
o  In teams, students will make a “System Poster” including all organs.
o  Students will do a one-paragraph report explaining an organ for their system poster.
o  We will do a compare and contrast map showing the source of two separate foods.
o  Students will take a test on food, nutrition, and exercise.
